Six Steps, One Bracelet — How Herb Sense Beads Are Made

Six Steps, One Bracelet — How Herb Sense Beads Are Made

There are no shortcuts in a bracelet made this way.

Each one begins as a careful selection of natural botanical materials — and not simply roots, resins, and dried bark, but premium Chinese herbs at the heart of every blend. They are composed together following traditional Chinese herbal practice, the way these botanicals have been paired for generations. From there, the process is unhurried and entirely by hand.

Step 1 — Select.

Premium Chinese herbs, precious aromatics, and botanical materials are sorted and prepared. What goes into the blend matters as much as how it is made.

Step 2 — Grind.

Each botanical is stone-ground in small batches. Low heat, slow process — to keep the aromatic character intact.

Step 3 — Sift.

The blended powder is passed through a fine sieve, worked until it reaches an even, silken consistency.

Step 4 — Press.

Makko powder — a natural, water-soluble binder derived from the bark of the Machilus thunbergii tree — is worked into the blend by hand. No synthetic glue. No chemical sealants.

Step 5 — Shape.

Each bead is rolled and pierced individually by skilled artisans trained in the heritage craft of traditional Chinese incense-making. The slight variation you see from bead to bead is not imperfection — it is evidence of the hand that made it.

Step 6 — String.

Once dried, the beads are threaded onto elastic cord and finished by hand — each piece checked closely before it is considered complete.

Natural variation in colour, texture, and scent is part of what makes each bracelet its own. Herb Sense pieces are scented botanical objects — made slowly, worn close.
